The Alzheimer’s Association has a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s disease. Not only do they contribute to the advancement of research, but they also provide care and support for those affected with the disease and their families. Currently, there are more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, and it is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States today. The Alzheimer’s Association seeks to educate people about Alzheimer’s and dementia with the goal of encouraging early detection and overall brain health.
In addition to local chapters in almost every state, the Alzheimer’s Association uses the Web to provide a plethora of resources. Their main site includes an extensive library of information on Alzheimer’s disease, from an interactive tour of the brain, to early warning signs, to tips for caretakers.
As an organization that is largely powered by volunteers, the Alzheimer’s Association has a dedicated website for those who want to take action. This site provides “simple ways to move the cause forward,” including writing Congress, starting an initiative in your workplace, and making a donation. There’s also the opportunity to join about fifty celebrities in the fight against Alzheimer’s by becoming a “champion.” The Alzheimer’s Association is also active on several social media sites including Twitter and Facebook.
The largest fundraising event for the Alzheimer’s Association is their annual Memory Walk. Walks take place across the country throughout the summer and fall with the goal of raising awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Each walker has a dedicated fundraising website where they can direct friends, family, and co-workers to support the cause. Memory Walk has raised $260 million since its inception in 1989.
